Frequently Asked Questions

I have no musical experience at all. Is MBS right for me?

Yes, absolutely. You don’t need any musical experience to start learning with us. We actively encourage complete beginners to get in touch so we can guide you through your first steps, and ensure you find the right instrument and teacher for you. We’ll teach you everything you need (and want) to know at your own pace, and we’ll keep it fun and engaging every step of the way.

I used to play an instrument but haven’t done so in a while. Can I pick up where I left off?

Yes, definitely. One of our mottos at MBS is “you set the pace, we’ll show you the way” - our highly experienced teachers will guide you through whatever you want to learn next, or revisit music you’ve learnt before if this feels right for you.

Would I be able to take a graded music exam on my instrument one day?

Of course! Anyone, at any age, can take an instrumental music exam. There are lots of options available - you can visit a nearby exam centre in person, you could make a recording that can be submitted online, or we can arrange for an examiner to visit you in some instances. Let us know what’s best for you and we’ll help make it happen.

Do I need to decide what instrument I’d like to learn before getting in touch?

Not necessarily. It’s important that you choose an instrument that you really like - something that you enjoy the sound of, and something that you’ll want to play every day. Consistency is key to getting the most out your lessons, both in terms of music-making, and overall health and wellbeing. If you know what you’d like to play - brilliant, but if you’re not quite sure yet, we’re happy to offer advice and guidance on what might be best for you. Similarly, if you start learning an instrument but decide later on that you’d like to try something else, that’s fine too.

I’d like to start learning the saxophone but I don’t own one - will I need to buy my own instrument?

If you’d like to buy your own instrument, we’d be more than happy to guide you through the process to make sure you’re getting the right instrument for you. If you’re not sure about buying yet, that’s fine too. We have a number of rental options available with highly competitive rates.
